Tendons
Is it possible for tendons to be dislocated?
This is not a very common occurrence, but it can happen. It is usually brought about buy a sudden wrenching movement sufficiently powerful to jolt the tendon out of the groove over a bone in which it normally runs. Treatment consists of manipulating the tendon back to its proper position. My boyfriend had an accident in which he cut through on of his wrist tendons. Will he be able to use his hand normally after the tendon has healed completely? The eventual outcome depends on the exact circumstances, but in most cases it is possible to sew the cut ends of the tendon together again.
This is usually successful in restoring full movement to the affected muscle on recovery. But the tendon may not seem as strong as it was before and its use may give rise to discomfort. Do cut tendons ever heal up naturally? If the tendon is nicked or only partially severed, scar tissue will probably form to fill in the gap. If the tendon is completely severed the two ends are likely either to spring apart because they are carefully identified and deliberately sewn firmly together, healing is unlikely.
What activities are most likely to cause actual damage to the tendons? Two quite different sorts. Sudden sharp strains or twisting pressures on a tendon are likely to tear some of the tendon fibers away from the bone to which they were anchored. Alternatively, repetition of a movement over a long period of time may use up all the lubricating fluid in the tendon sheath and thus give rise to the friction and inflammation of tenosynovitis.
