Is nicotine chewing gum of any real help in trying to give up smoking? Yes. Reliable trials have shown that nicotine chewing gum does reduce the craving for a cigarette that is often particularly distress rig, and sometimes a cause of failure in the first two weeks of giving up smoking. It is therefore an effective anti-smoking aid that is worth trying. In spite of many attempts I have not been able to give up smoking. Not wanting to feel left out is a particularly important factor in considering what happens to make children start smoking. Many children are conditioned almost from birth to the expectation that they will smoke. There are strong connections between children smoking and the smoking habits of their parents and older brothers and sisters. This is hardly surprising when the strength of family bonds and the desire of small children to be like their elders is taken into consideration.
